Remote-flexible working at Flash Pack
What is Remote Flexible?
Hybrid working can mean different things to different companies so we’ve opted to call our way of working ‘Remote Flexible’ as a way to reflect the Flash Pack experience.
While working remotely has been a success, facilitating connection and friendship is at the heart of everything we do and we’ve missed spending time with each other in person to build relationships, share ideas and learn from each other. With Remote Flexible, we want to give Flashpackers the freedom to choose where they work the majority of the time but still facilitate regular face-to-face working.
Office attendance requirements are determined team-by-team and there must be a clear goal to onsite working together, for example using the time for team building, knowledge-sharing, training, workshops and planning. No employees have been asked to work in the office on a regular basis with the majority of teams opting to come together once a month.
The rest of the time Flashpackers may choose to work from home or the office, whichever suits them best.
Does Flash Pack have offices?
Not anymore. We have opted for a co-working space in Fora Borough which is available to book anytime you wish to get out of the house.
Does Remote Flexible mean Flashpackers can work anywhere in the world?
Yes, sort of! We’re a travel company, if we can’t give flashpackers the flexibility to travel and work. - who can? After the founders tested it out in Sri Lanka, we introduced a policy that allows flashpackers to work abroad up to 1 month a year (subject to the terms of our International Working Policy.)
We also allow folks to work permanently within ±2 hours of any location we hold an office in, as long as they’re willing to travel to our office for company wide events. We cover the expenses if we ask you to come in for a company wide event. Currently, we only hold an office in London
Will we ever meet as a company?
Yes! We know that many of our team have missed the opportunity to spend time together in person and get to know their fellow flashpackers off-camera, and one of our key goals is to facilitate the development of relationships and connection.
While we are still small, we occasionally ask flashpackers to attend whole-team meetings, and on top of these meetings there will be a range of optional events.
We also see the role of the office manager to be less focused on physical office management and much more focused on creating events and curating interactions. This will range from planning the calendar and ensuring that varied teams overlap and interact in the office, to large-scale multi-day offsites. On top of this, we aim to restart our calendar of social events soon to keep the team mingling and motivated.
Testing and iterating
While we’re confident that Remote Flexible is the way forward, we know we won’t get it completely right the first time!
We are using the next 12 months as a trial period in which we’ll experiment and iterate. Flashpackers will be asked for feedback and opinions regularly.
